A Mechanical Speed Governor is an assembly of a butterfly valve, flyweights and oil pump to regulate the water flow for a turbine-generator coupling experiencing varying load conditions. Flying weights move in and out in response to deviation from the standard RPM i.e 1500. This movement of flying weights is due to centrifugal force. A shaft is attached to the flying weights which undergoes predefined displacement , pumping the respective hydraulic connections for opening or closing the control valve accordingly.
As the load increases generator resistance increases which should be overcome by the coupled turbine by increasing the shaft power and vice versa. In short the turbine RPM should remain constant for constant frequency i.e. 50Hz for Pakistan.
