Approach Heirarchy and Time Line
Working Principle
A Mechanical Speed Governor is an assembly of a butterfly valve, flyweights and oil pump to regulate the water flow for a turbine-generator coupling experiencing varying load conditions. Flying weights move in and out in response to deviation from the standard RPM i.e 1500. This movement of flying weights is due to centrifugal force. A shaft is attached to the flying weights which undergoes predefined displacement , pumping the respective hydraulic connections for opening or closing the control valve accordingly.
As the load increases generator resistance increases which should be overcome by the coupled turbine by increasing the shaft power and vice versa. In short the turbine RPM should remain constant for constant frequency i.e. 50Hz for Pakistan.

Need Statement
- Scarcity of know-how to produce hydraulic governor for effective utilization of hydal power.
- To provide engineering basis for the design and manufacturing of hydraulic speed governor to be used with micro hydro turbine.
Abstract
Mechanical Speed governor is an assembly of a butterfly valve, flyweights and oil pump to regulate the water flow for a turbine-generator coupling experiencing varying load conditions.
As the load increases generator resistance increases which should be overcome by the coupled turbine by increasing the shaft power and vice versa. In short the turbine RPM should remain constant for constant frequency i.e. 50Hz for Pakistan.
Considering the latest energy shortfall in the country, and keeping in mind the potential of Micro hydro power plants in the north of country, it makes sense to take up this project as final year project. The project aims at providing engineering basis to the design and manufacturing of hydraulic governors for the local manufacturers. Modeling and simulation is the key part of the project. Following a systematic approach, analysis and study of Hydraulic speed governor would enhance the ability of local manufacturers in not only understanding the mechanism but also in manufacturing. This would go a long way in overcoming the electricity shortage in the country.
